I am offended by the words of people who are so cavalier about the death of the great Whitney Houston. Statements like: “waste of talent,” “I don’t feel sorry for her” and “she blew it” shock and sicken me. It’s as if they have no compassion and seemingly revel in the demise of others. No, I did not know her personally, but as an artist and most certainly as a singer, I feel a certain kinship with the Whitney’s and the Amy’s (Winehouse) of our world. Whitney’s voice was tremendous and her gift literally touched the world. Ask any of the singers who were inspired by her great talent!
I am grateful for her gifts. And I am fortunate that I got to experience them while she was here amongst us. I am happy to celebrate her achievements and her beauty. To hell with the rest. What’s the point? Personal demons – I got ’em too. I don’t want anybody focusing on that shit when there is so much more to discuss. It doesn’t make me feel good to dwell on that other crap. Does it make these detractors feel better to dwell on the negative? It makes me wonder …
There were people who cared about her because of her gift. They hoped for her recovery and wished that she would reclaim her peace. Whitney was a star. Becoming a star is a miracle. Maintaining that status is a miracle. Making miracles can’t be easy. Just being a regular joe comes with its own brand of crazy. Ya feel me? Have a heart!
