Despite my frequent moments of panic over ticket sales, preparation for my musical tribute to Nina Simone at City Winery NY has helped me grow in so many ways. The fact is that all of the promotion and just getting to the gig has fallen on my shoulders. I had to find replacement players (found some world class professionals) and now is the time to focus on the material – all the while carrying on the PR campaign. But as daunting as these tasks seemed, I had enough lead time to lay a good foundation and create a strategy and MOST IMPORTANTLY I discovered how many friends I have. I have discovered that people care about me and want to help me. I am humbled by this and it never ceases to amaze me. I am so grateful that it makes me weep even as I write this. It’s all about connection. I have to say it. I have connected with people through my talent, my personality and my sincerity. I have always thought of myself as unworthy of special recognition. Then I saw Macy Gray last night live in concert. There she stood: tall, vulnerable and glorious. There was no histrionics, no special effects – just a woman being herself and I finally got it. I won’t lose myself in thinking I’m a star but I won’t ignore the love that I have been so fortunate to receive. I am blessed. I am the singer. I have a voice, great instincts and a good heart. Despite all of the many mistakes I have made personally and professionally – I am here.
I’m still here.
I welcome all to come for the ride. New York City here I come!
