I had a 6AM flight. I did not sleep the night before and so I traveled to NYC on no sleep. I got picked up by a dear soul (my friend Lisa) who brought me “snacks for the plane!” who offered to come round for me at 4:30am. (I’d have to mention the other angel in my life: BFF Brenda who gave me cash so I wouldn’t be totally broke on my trip.) After a Hellish flight of cramped quarters for my ass and legs, I got off the plane and took the Q33 bus through Queens to the Subway station. By the time the R train came I was dripping with sweat in the steamy subway tunnel and thinking to myself: “I HATE NY!” followed by “What the Hell am I doing?”
Contrary to weather forecasts, it was bright and sunny. I was fat and runny with sweat. I must have been quite a sight: dripping with sweat and hobbling up the stairs with my wheeled luggage, one foot, one step at a time. On two occasions, a kind gentleman would sweep up my carry-on and dash up the stairs with it. I kept picturing them running off with it down the street but no, they waited for my old ass to catch up, handed it off to me and answered my sheepish murmur of “Thank you so much” with a bright NYC smile. I got to my hotel at around 11AM, checked into my room, threw myself on the king-sized bed and slept until 3:30pm. I jumped up, showered, dressed and ventured out to go to City Winery NY to pass out my postcards at the English Beat concert. By this time the skies had turned gray and it was raining steadily. But never mind that – I was determined. I had a compact hooded rain poncho and was wearing flip flops bedazzled with Swarovski crystals. I was on a mission.
