I feel much better. That “small steps” thing really works. I tackled a bunch of stuff and made far more headway then I imagined possible. I used to stand or step over the mess in my place, shaking my head the whole time while saying out loud to myself:
“This is effen impossible!”
However, this time I just started putting things back in their place. I had forgotten that everything does have a place, even in my apartment, which up until this evening I had referred to as “The Pit of Despair.”
This is how it went:
Walk down hallway, pick mail up off the floor, sort and throw out catalogs (I ain’t buying shit ever again so I don’t even need to look through them). Drag suitcases out to the storage space and put them away. (It’s amazing how much floor space an empty suitcase can fill!) Gather the collection of empty shipping boxes scattered everywhere and break them down, stack them up and take them to the dumpster. Collect the various shopping bags, plastic bags, condiments and paper napkins from my food delivery orders and toss them into the trash. ( It’s amazing how much room a few empty boxes, bags, dozens of packets of soy sauce and hot mustard will fill) Pick up the two dozen or so hangers from all over the place, wash my summer’s worth of dirty dishes and dump the rank water from several flower vases (the blooms long thrown away) and wash them too. Pick up several pairs of shoes, hang up several feather boas, sort laundry and put away about a kazilion DVD’s.
And THEN I sat on the stationary bike and rode that for twenty minutes. I didn’t try to imagine any long stint on the bike. I just got on the damned thing and started pedaling. I even worked up a little sweat.
Small steps, many small steps. It seemed daunting at first, but I gotta admit: I feel GRRRREAT!

Playing amazing music real loud and cleaning works. Do the easy stuff first and then tackle the shit jobs later, over wine.

Yes, I used to have housecleaning tunes…
