I am writing this as I cool off in the private hydratherapy bath treatment suite at the Spa at Trump which is located in the Trump Hotel Chicago. I can crawl in and out of the bath to go have a seat by the window and glance at this beautiful city. This is the wind down from my first day at the gym. I will follow this with a nice steam and then a stimulating shower before I head home after a rather triumphant day of exercise.

I have been a member of the Spa at Trump since it opened in 2008. Membership includes free access to the health club, pool, dry and steam saunas, deluge shower, luxury quiet lounge areas, discounts on purchased spa treatments and all around gorgeousness. I have indulged in many of their luxurious treatments back in the day including massages from one of the best massage therapists I have ever encountered. (Really. This man is like a healing shaman … and he’s hot! Bonus!) I have splashed around in the pool. I’ve stood under the deluge shower – a six foot by 4 foot, nine shower head system with custom water temperature, pressure and lighting effects (my personal favorite is “thunderstorm”). I have refreshed in both of the saunas though I definitely prefer the steam. I have definitely indulged in a whole bunch of the spa treats but before today I have only used the Health Club once. I would proudly give tours of it to my guests from out of town but I never used it fully until today. And man did I make up for lost time.
Spa members are assigned a locker and I stocked mine with a complete set of gym clothes and a swimsuit. (which can be laundered by spa staff daily and placed back in your locker for your next visit) I approached my locker (which one is it?) and secretly hoped my clothes hadn’t succumbed to dry rot. I punched in my combination – a number from my childhood or I would have never remembered it – and was greeted by a small gift bag and card inside.
What’s this? A gift from the spa staff?
I open the card. It reads: Happy Birthday from the Staff at The Spa at Trump.
How sweet! My birthday was in July. It’s been there waiting for months… Oy!
I grab my stuff and quickly change. Sneakers, black shorts, white bra top and red oversized racer back T-shirt. Well, it used to be oversized. I am now “Work-out girl!” I exit the women’s locker room and approach the long hallway that leads to the doors marked “Health Club.” Up until this point, the spa is tranquil, it smells deliciously of essential oils, the colors and furniture are all sage and calmness. Candlelight flickers in the quiet area of the spa treatment wing, it’s dark and serene there. You exhale in there. The uniform is spa robes and slippers. But the health club is totally different. It is filled with contraptions and curious objects. It’s bright and set for bodies in motion. The soundtrack of this area is pop music, flat screen TV’s are flashing images, each cardio-machine sports it’s own TV monitor for private viewing as you work out. It’s time to rock and roll. To be continued…

Oh crap. I thought my gym had it all with the steam sauna the size of a small shed. When I visit, we so so so need to visit there. Lucky duck!!!
