Lynne Jordan | A Great Big Diva

Swine Flu, the House Of Blues, Toll Free Callers, Cat Hair

May 5, 2009 By //  by Lynne Jordan

I had 17 calls fro solicitors between 8:05AM and 4:00PM. There oughta be a law!! I usually look at the caller ID and ignore them but finally at call #16, I answered:

(pause…background noise) Hi, uh… Lynne?

Who is this?

Is this Lynne?

Yes, who is this?

It’s Carl.

Carl who?

I’m calling from Debt…

(interrupting) Let me save your breath, I’m really not interested.

Why are you being so rude?

Excuse me?

Why do you have to be so rude?

I don’t know you. You called me randomly, surely you are not surprised that I’m not willing to engage you in pleasantries! I swear I said “engage in pleasantries!”

Well. I called to help you, but you – you’re being so rude…

I take a deep breath and in the calmest, sweetest voice I could muster:

You need a thicker skin for this job A, and B: I wasn’t being rude, THIS is rude!

CLICK. I hung up!! GRRRRRR!!!

It has been a strange few daze… I hate being rude, even to phone solicitors. I usually try to be pleasant, even when they won’t take no for an answer. But today I’d had enough.

I saw three people with surgical masks on to avert the Swine flu. I read somewhere that the mask serves most effectively to keep your germs away from everyone else when you sneeze or cough. Somehow I don’t think these people were protecting anyone else. I’m pretty sure they were protecting themselves. It was comical and reminded me of the footage I’d seen of people in China during the SARS scare.

Does anyone feel any fear or threat regarding the Swine flu? I read that it’s dying down and the strains we have encountered are not as ferocious as expected.

Tonight, I sing at the House of Blues. I hope I get a good crowd and that I have fun!

I just pulled one cat hair out of my eyeball and another one from my mouth.

I just got six more toll free calls in the thirty minutes I’ve been sitting here typing!

I need a drink.

The masks are extreme, but maybe it makes them feel like they’re being protected and so provides a placebo effect. I do sort of cringe and put my hand up to my nose and mouth when the person next to me in the checkout line sneezes. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Of course, that probably doesn’t help much unless I’ve just used anti-bact hand sanitizer. Oh well!
