I was just inspired by three truly unique performers. I know it’s an unlikely grouping but if you think about it – they have some important similarities: uniqueness, individuality, control over their own careers, intelligence and they are/were fantastic. It is the individuality of these three artists that has touched me. A British comedian, a Bluesman and Nina Simone. Their names alone say who they are if you know them. Think about it. Russell Brand: that’s who he is. Howlin’ Wolf: He’s Howlin Wolf. And Nina Simone: Need I say more? You really can’t pigeon hole either one of them.
Nina Simone sang what she wanted regardless of popular musical tastes of the time. Howlin Wolf had a voice and stage swagger that is unlike anyone before or since. Russell Brand is so unique I don’t know how to describe him except to say that he is super smart and super funny and at the top of his game. I saw Russell Brand Wednesday night at the Chicago Theater. He walked into the audience, interacted with us, did his bits and made me think and howl with laughter. He is honest, foul mouthed, sensual and spiritual. He is also quite smart and displays his vocabulary and grasp of the world in runs that dazzle you. Nina was a child prodigy and singer/performer of great depth. Y’all know how I feel about her. I have created a show around her music. I just got home from seeing Black Ensemble Theatre’s TERRIFIC production of “Ain’t No Cryin’ the Blues, In Memory of Howlin Wolf.” Howling Wolf was the quintessential Bluesman with a head for business and a stage show that knocked ’em off their feet. All three of these artists are one-of-a-kind performers who didn’t/don’t give a fuck about current standards of beauty, popular trends in their genres or politesse!
I was once asked: “What inspires you as a performer?” I answered: going to see live performances, art & theater.
True that.
I am inspired, excited and empowered by these three artists.
