Kitty or No Kitty

December 9, 2008 By //  by Lynne Jordan

… cat that is…  I am facing a major life decision.  I have the opportunity to adopt a cat.  She has been immunized, micro chipped and neutered.  She comes fully equipped: litter box, scratching post etc.  And she has been called “a sweetie”  Colin (my production main man and good friend) thinks we would be a good match.  I just don’t know…

I had a kitty for almost nineteen years.  She was a small (runt of the litter) black short haired mutt named “Kitty.”  We lived together comfortably for almost nineteen years at which point I had to put her down.  I remember crying for the entire night afterwards.  My home seemed so empty without her.  I often marveled that an animal so small left such a huge void in my home.  That was six years ago.  I haven’t had a pet since.

Don’t get me wrong,  I was upset shortly after her death but I got over it.  I don’t mean to sound heartless, I just want you to know that I am not one of those sentimental souls when it comes to my pets.  I have friends who still mourn their lost pets (with tears) from years back.  I understand their attachment.  And I don’t want to offend.  That’s just not me.

My biggest heartache over a lost pet came at an early age when my mother refused to get off the phone to help me find my lost puppy.  And once she threw my kitten out of the house because he knocked over an iron. (he jumped on the ironing board)  And she refused to let him back in.  And threatened to punish me for crying about it.  He eventually wondered off never to return.  Now, that brings me to tears. Whew!  My mama was a tough one sometimes.  She never ever had a pet as a child.  She just didn’t get that you had to tolerate some animal mishaps.  Hmmm… wonder if that has something to do with my lack of sentimentality regarding my pets?

But back to my present dilemma: pussy or no pussy?  I adore cats.  I think they are so cute and funny!

I have asked my cat owning friends.  They all say: “NO! Don’t do it!”  Then five minutes later they exclaim:

“Oh! Melon is so cute!”

or,

“I love when Stormy curls up next to me and purrrrs!”

That does not help me.  I am just more confused.  I love cats.  Though the prospect of live poo (laying in the litterbox) in my house bums me out, all other aspects of acquiring a new kitty are quite pleasant.  Of course my niece Whitney responds with a resounding “YES!” but she thought the pigeons nesting next to my window air-conditioning unit were cool.

Any opinions?
