I saw “Jersey Boys” tonight in Chicago. It was wonderful! “Jersey Boys” is not an oldies revue nor is it some overblown, typical Broadway fare. It’s a story about four boys from da hood (New Jersey) who happen to make it in the music industry. It’s funny and human. It’s another “American Dream” tale that happens to be true and chock full of great tunes. It never struck me as nostalgic nor corny.
I loved it because it was so clever and because the characters use the “F word a lot.” These are Jersey boys after all. And the staging was simple yet so clever and fantastic – all at the same time! In fact, I was inspired by a bit of staging they did. The concept would work for my one woman show. The performances were excellent. There was only one weak vocal and thankfully she wasn’t a lead character And we, the audience, never batted an eye.
Thanks to my pal Babs for letting me in on the fun! Two tickets to the show was her birthday present from her good friend Glen who also took us out to dinner. Dinner & the theater: what a marvelous way to have fun in Chicago.
You know I have pretty much ignored the huge productions that have been marching in & out of Chicago but I think it has truly been my loss. I know there has been a lot of hoopla over the invasion of Chicago’s theater scene by these huge productions, but you know… I had a blast. And nothing takes the place of small independent theater. I hope they will exist peacefuly together. I think I may take in the green show next: “Wicked.”
