I ate fried chicken and corn bread.
Okay, let me elaborate: I ate three pieces of fried chicken and two (or three) pieces of cornbread – they were smallish – seriously. The good news is that I did not punish myself nor give up on the whole idea of watching what I eat… I just fell off the wagon, but I’m back on it today. Today, I ate salad and veggies and walked around outside. I was determined to have a better day – today.
Last night I watched a few episodes of the NatGeo Channel series entitled: Taboo. Some of the titles were: Drugs; Prostitution, Gender and Fat. The Fat episode was compelling. It showed a man who was called “super, super obese.” He weighed over 600 pounds with a BMI of over 100 and could not walk. His weight was too much for his legs and body to bear. Believe you me, I could relate as my sore knees could attest to that reality. His physicians gave him two choices: lose weight or die. He chose life. He had surgery to force himself to lose weight.
The show was interspersed with proponents of “Fat Acceptance,” as well as scholars foretelling the doom of the world population due to obesity. There is even a term for the global spread of obesity – Globesity!
Seriously, the World Health Association (WHO) has determined that:
“the global epidemic of overweight and obesity – “globesity” – is rapidly becoming a major public health problem in many parts of the world.”
It is a problem because of all of the weight related problems: higher risk for heart problems, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, joint issues…
And I thought it was just me!!
Seriously, there are so many factors impacting how much food we consume – when and where – and the accessibility to technology enables us to stay and sit on our asses and makes inactivity the norm. You don’t even have to go to an office anymore and you certainly don’t have to walk – anywhere. It takes a lot of work for us non fitness culture types to get into the mindset of living healthy.
Small steps.
So, I took the express bus home tonight and walked the three blocks to my house. I haven’t done that in ages – the walking or bussing. I save money ($13 cheaper than a taxi) and added steps. My friend Deb has been trying to get me to get a pedometer for ages. I think I will purchase one. Every step brings me closer to good health and weight loss and away from Globesity!
P.S. By the way, the fried chicken was delicious!! Was it worth dying for? Hell no! Fried chicken is going to have to be a rare indulgence for me and I’m good with that.

I went to the dr.s last spring and he “matter of factly” told me for my height and age, I need to lose about 25 pounds. That was about a year ago. I have lost about 4. At my age, it is definitely tougher but I am just trying to BE healthy and not worry about the poundage. My weakness is pastries! Bagels, scones, muffins, strudel. But good luck, sounds like you are making a turn around.

I’m trying – everyday – some days are better than others…
