A gig tonight

April 18, 2009 By //  by Lynne Jordan

And in these lean times, a gig tonight is a very good thing!! We are doing a private school fundraiser. We have done this event now for about five years. In fact, this is the school that President Obama’s girls (Malia and Sasha) attended since pre-school and He & First Lady Michele Obama have attended this event every year – until last year. Mrs. Obama attended solo last year as Mr. Obama was rather busy! I believe it was at one of the these galas that I first witnessed (then) U.S. Senator Obama and Michelle dancing together – and they danced a lot.

Actually, I have encountered President Obama on several occasions whilst performing for some event here in Chicago. I cried whenever I saw him speak and told him so once during a charity event at which he was the Keynote. I believe he was running for U.S. Senate then. He was very personable, funny and passionate. And Michele reminds me so much of my sister in law – it ain’t funny!

In fact, it has just struck me again that I can find common physical traits between the First Lady of the United States and my sister in law. It still amazes me that we have a Black President of the United States. I would have never deemed it possible just two years ago. This country is capable of such miracles sometimes…

By the way, haters, we got a Black President and the world didn’t end; the country hasn’t eclipsed into total ruin (that was started before he took office) and no one has been forced to eat fried chicken!

BUT WAIT! This post was supposed to be about my getting ready for my gig tonight.

We haven’t had a formal event in several weeks and so I gotta pull out the old black tie attire: evening gown, jewelry, full make up and heels. I don’t think I’ve worn my contact lenses since my last formal event in March! And my period started today. Ugh! I am hoping a good long shower will wash away my feelings of all around “ugh – iness.”

Don’t get me wrong, I am very grateful for this job tonight. It’s been really slow – business wise – around these parts, however I have enjoyed the freedom and the free time of late. But tonight it’s time to make the donuts! I hope the guests will be their usual fun selves tonight – and dance.

Oh, Vodka, the staff of life! I’m drinking a lovely cocktail right now. We just got back from that fabulous art show and met and spent some great time with this famous painter who hosted the show. He was all over the Higgs who wore this great shirt showing a guy with a shot glass and the words “Mr. Booze” on the front, he was the hit of the party! We are now going to
go have our drinks in the hot tub 😉
