Michael Jackson’s Death

I am so sad today. I am amazed at how this news has touched me. I grew up listening to Michael Jackson.

My memories stretch back for years: I can visualize scenes from basement birthday parties where the music of the Jackson 5 is the soundtrack. My first memorized pop song lyrics come to mind with his voice singing them:

ABC, EASY AS ONE, TWO, THREE, AS SIMPLE AS DO RE MI, ABC, THAT’S HOW EASY LOVE CAN BE…

I WANT YOU BACK,

I’LL BE THERE… takes me right back to Jonetta Jones’ house. It’s a bright sunny day. The house is illuminated by sunlight. We are sitting in her sister’s bedroom, on her bed listening to her records. I can even picture the arrangement of the furniture. Just impressions really…

STOP THE LOVE YOU SAVE MAY BE YOUR OWN

and then in later years: Off the Wall, Billie Jean & Thriller.

Mamasay mamasa mamacoosa

I mimic his “whoo hoo.” My friend Charlie spencer could moonwalk.. It is amazing how much pop music has formed the memories of our lives.

He was one of our first African American superstars. He was ours to share and thus he belongs to us all, But I guess that was the problem. We felt that we knew him and he was “ours” but he was always so sad and lonely and… troubled.

Poor Michael. I hope that he had some true happiness in a life that gave so much joy to others. I don’t care about the rumors and allegations and the gossip. I always turned a blind eye when it came to Michael Jackson. I always felt protective when it came to Michael Jackson. and I’m not the only one. I already told one friend to shut up with the “Jacko -shit” and “child molester” shit.

I’m not wanting to hear that right now. We are in mourning for one of our shining stars. I told you how Black folks get about our shining stars…

Rest in peace Michael and… and… thank you.
