Me & the Million Dollar Quartet
I have been asked to appear and sing with the cast of the Million Dollar Quartet at the Apollo theater in Chicago on Thursday, May 20, 2010. The show has been playing here to sold out houses for darn near two years.
You must be asking: How did you pull this one out of your hat?
Well, Lynne Jordan & the Shivers was hired by a woman (who happens to be producing the show) to perform for her sister’s surprise 60th birthday party. She brought in the Million Dollar Quartet (MDQ) to do a brief performance after our last set and to close the party. Subsequently the cast of MDQ saw me sing and wanted me to jam with them at the finale of a performance of the show.
The idea was thrown out at me and of course I was like: “I’m in!” I followed up via email with the producer (a wonderful kindred spirit) and went to see the show the following week. I loved the show. The show documents the jam session that takes place at the famed Sun Record Label studios of former Sun Recording artists: Elvis Presley who left sun and became a huge star; Johnny Cash, whose sun contract is about to expire; newcomer Jerry Lee Lewis; Carl Perkins who is sill trying to find a follow up hit to “Blue Suede Shoes” and Sun producer and founder Sam Phillips. The fellows tease each other, explore their poor Southern roots, harmonize on hymns and rock out. I was very impressed by the play. I found it informative, uproarious and wonderful fun. You really do buy that you’re watching these phenoms in the prime of their performing lives. It is a bit of a miracle. The end of the play signals the “jam finale” where the boys just go crazy and rock out which brings the entire audience to their feet. It will be at this point that the Sam Phillips character will call me onto the stage to do a number or two with the cast.
I think it will be an awesome and exciting experience. Once again, I am calling on on my peeps to catch the show!! Maybe the Lynne Jordan fans will help pack the house. Maybe that will prompt another appearance at another performance?
In the mean time we are going to start publicizing my appearance. I have to come up with a tag line which means some totally over the top one line description like:
“Chicago’s Own Diva – Lynne Jordan” or “The toast of Chicago: Lynne Jordan!”
I’m gonna ask someone else to come up with that one!
And that’s the deal with me and the Million Dollar Quartet.
P.S. The show has opened on Broadway in New York City and is doing very well…
